We're going to wrap up Women's History Month…

We're going to wrap up Women's History Month today with this recruitment poster from our The Collections Research Center at Mystic Seaport.

The WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) were established in August, 1942 thanks to the hard work of House of Representative members Edith Nourse Rogers and Margaret Chase Smith, together with Eleanor Roosevelt. They fought hard to secure congressional approval. President Roosevelt signed the bill to create the Women’s Reserve of the Naval Reserve. Within a year more than 27,000 women wore the WAVES uniform.
